The large main roads on Antigua are typically in pretty good condition, but smaller roads may be less developed.  Animals and slow-moving vehicles can congest roads that already have large numbers of bends and potholes.
Things to consider:

  • Cost – Like most islands in the Caribbean, Antigua’s car rental companies are somewhat more expensive than those in the United States. However, the difference is not significant enough to dissuade many travelers from choosing this mode of transport.
  • Driving on Antigua – In addition to an international driver’s license or a valid driver’s license from your country of residence, a temporary permit to drive in Antigua is required. The rental agency can assist you in getting this temporary license, which is valid for six months and costs approximately $12 to $20 US.
  • What do you want to do? – Antigua is a good-sized island, and driving can be a great option for those intending to take in many of the sights and attractions.
  • What to watch for – Driving is done on the left side of the road on Antigua, so visitors from the U.S. will need to adapt to this important change.  The 40 mph speed limit is generally not regulated or enforced, thus drivers should always travel defensively, looking out for fast or aggressive drivers and  damaged roads.  A lack of directional guides and signposts means that drivers will want to frequently consult their maps and ask for directions.  Permits can be obtained from the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board (268-460-8300/1) or from rental companies.

For such a small island, Aruba boasts plenty of car rental companies for visitors to choose from. Roads are well kept and traffic flow has been improved in recent years with a number of roundabouts.  Things to consider:

  • Cost – Though the cost of renting a car in Aruba is higher than it would be in the U.S., the difference is not substantial.
  • Driving on Aruba – Visitors to Aruba are required to possess an international driver’s license or any valid license held for a minimum of two years. The minimum driving age to rent a car and drive on Aruba varies from 21 to 25 depending on the car rental company, with the maximum age running between 65 and 70. (Call car rental companies for details.) Aruba uses international road signs, and distances and speeds are measured using kilometers. There are no right turns at red lights on the island of Aruba.
  • What do you want to do? – While Aruba is a small island, there is much to see and do. For travelers on the go who want to do as much as possible, a car rental might be a good idea. For those taking a more leisurely approach to their stay, scooters, public transportation, and walking are suggested methods of traversing the island.
  • What to watch for – Arubans are very friendly drivers and tend to stop frequently to say hello to friends and yield the right of way. Although the goats around the island typically avoid traffic, be sure to exercise caution when navigating roads with herds nearby.
