Renting a Car in Antigua

Should I rent a car in Antigua?
The large main roads on Antigua are typically in pretty good condition, but smaller roads may be less developed.  Animals and slow-moving vehicles can congest roads that already have large numbers of bends and potholes.
Things to consider:

• Cost – Like most islands in the Caribbean, Antigua’s car rental companies are somewhat more expensive than those in the United States. However, the difference is not significant enough to dissuade many travelers from choosing this mode of transport.
• Driving on Antigua – In addition to an international driver’s license or a valid driver’s license from your country of residence, a temporary permit to drive in Antigua is required. The rental agency can assist you in getting this temporary license, which is valid for six months and costs approximately $12 to $20 US.
• What do you want to do? – Antigua is a good-sized island, and driving can be a great option for those intending to take in many of the sights and attractions.
• What to watch for – Driving is done on the left side of the road on Antigua, so visitors from the U.S. will need to adapt to this important change.  The 40 mph speed limit is generally not regulated or enforced, thus drivers should always travel defensively, looking out for fast or aggressive drivers and  damaged roads.  A lack of directional guides and signposts means that drivers will want to frequently consult their maps and ask for directions.  Permits can be obtained from the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board (268-460-8300/1) or from rental companies.
